Python and FastAPI hosting for small client apps
Deploying a Python service is easy once. Operating several client services consistently is the harder part: process supervision, HTTPS, environment variables, logs, health checks and backups.
Deployment checklist
- Run the application behind a production process manager or container runtime.
- Keep secrets in environment variables or a secret store, not in Git.
- Expose a health endpoint for monitoring and restart decisions.
- Terminate HTTPS at a reverse proxy or managed edge.
- Collect application and access logs somewhere easy to inspect.
- Back up persistent data and verify restoration, not just backup creation.
VPS, PaaS or managed hosting?
A VPS gives full control but leaves you responsible for the complete server lifecycle. A PaaS reduces setup and maintenance, while managed hosting can go further by standardizing deployment and operational support across multiple client projects.
FastAPI-specific considerations
Use an appropriate ASGI server, define a clear startup command, avoid storing application state only in memory when it must survive restarts, and make database migrations part of a controlled deployment procedure.
